Этот шаблон используется, чтобы представить разметку или код рядом с результатом его применения.
Использование
Каждая ячейка в первой колонке ("Markup") использует <pre>, to retain newlines and spaces but styled to allow content to wrap within it. It is usually desirable to escape the content of these cells so that the markup is displayed by wrapping the markup in <nowiki>. It is technically not possible to add this feature to the template.
Каждая ячейка во второй колонке ("Renders as") скопирована из соответствующей ячейки "разметки" перед ней. Есть случаи, когда это может отличаться:

Citation Style 1 и Citation Style 2 — два незначительно различающихся способа оформления ссылок на источники, использующиеся как в английском разделе Википедии, так и в русском для совместимости и более простого перевода. Соответствующие шаблоны, как правило, имеют англоязычные названия, начинающиеся на cite — {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}}.
Шаблоны CS1/2 использует несколько адаптированные для разделов Википедии элементы «Чикагского руководства по стилю» и «Стиля АПА». Существуют аналоги шаблонов CS1/2, использующие ГОСТ Р 7.0.5—2008 в качестве стиля оформления: {{cite book}} → {{книга}}, {{cite journal}} → {{статья}} и {{citation}} → {{публикация}}.
Реализация
Практически все шаблоны CS1/2 реализованы при помощи Модуль:Citation/CS1 (именно 1, не 2) и выдают сообщения об ошибках при некорректном заполнении.

Стили CS1 и CS2 отличаются друг от друга незначительно:
- CS1 разделяет элементы точками, а CS2 — запятыми;
- CS1 завершает ссылку точкой, а CS2 — нет.
