Mrk 209 is a dwarf galaxy with a bit of star formation going on, and thus is said to be blue. A few years back this one was processed and released by the ESA folks, but in the intervening years, further observations have been made. Ultraviolet and narrowband H-alpha bands are now available, so I thought I would newly reprocess the image with those additions. This allowed me to generate a more familiar image with pink hydrogen clouds rather than blue ones even though the near-infrared band (F814W) still occupies the red channel and the red band (F606W) sits within the green channel. The UV data, which is all blue in my image, really highlights some of those young and brightly burning blue stars which make the galaxy a noteworthy dwarf.

To the right is a local Milky Way star that appears bright to Hubble, but is actually a dim, anonymous star of little interest to the astronomical community. It looks nice in the composition, though. I think that the wider field of view allows one to see how far the fainter, highly diffuse outer reaches extend far beyond what could visually define the outline of the galaxy.

LEGUS data products (except H-alpha, as of this writing) are available from this page: archive.stsci.edu/prepds/legus/dataproducts-public.html

Data from the following proposals was used:

The Dynamic State of the Dwarf Galaxy Rich Canes Venatici I Region H-alpha LEGUS: Unveiling the Interplay Between Stars, Star Clusters, and Ionized Gas LEGUS: Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey

Red: WFC3/UVIS F657N + ACS/WFC F814W

Green: ACS/WFC F606W Blue: WFC3/UVIS F275W + WFC3/UVIS F336W + WFC3/UVIS F438W

North is NOT up. It is 31° counter-clockwise from up.
