Have still got so many to post up from New Zealand, but I found this chap today and wanted to share it. Very cool!
This is undoubtably a new species for Tasmania which I'm pleased about! As N. minutus has some grey/blue pigment in its description key, I'm thinking perhaps in that genus direction, although this is pretty much covered in slate! It was at the most 0.6mm big. It carries its head lower than N. murinus, more like a Megalothorax but body shaped like Neelus. It's got really deep and large sensory pits, especially on the head as well as a very distinctive look.
I found this on the side of a tree fern gully, near St. Columba's falls, 28km from St. Helens in Tasmania. Also found one of the massive 16mm springtails, but I'll save those for another time! I'm also going back tomorrow to see if I can get better photos as these are a little lacking. It's very frustrating for me as I don't have any way to take specimens. Question for Frans- could I use vodka as a temporary measure?
I got leeched for the first time in my life today too. Forgot about those pesky rain forests. My leg bled for seven hours. It's stopped now, thankfully!
